What is the best time of year to book senior portraits in Maine?
DNA Photography photographs seniors across Southern Maine and Central Maine year-round, with the most popular windows being late spring through early fall — May through October. Summer sessions book fastest, particularly for families who want images ready before fall school deadlines. DNA Photography recommends booking six to eight weeks in advance at minimum, and earlier for Signature Experience sessions, which are limited each season.
We've learned that the seniors who get the most out of their session are the ones who planned ahead — not because of availability, but because the planning itself is part of what makes the experience feel intentional. The earlier you book, the more time we have to build a solid plan together.
-
How far in advance should we book a senior portrait session in Maine?
DNA Photography recommends booking senior portrait sessions in Maine at least six to eight weeks before your ideal session date. Summer and early fall dates — the most requested windows in Southern Maine and the Greater Portland area — often fill by late spring. Signature Experience sessions are limited each season and tend to book earliest. The earlier a family books, the more flexibility they have in choosing locations, planning outfits, and building out the full creative direction.
We'd rather turn away a family because we're full than rush a session because the calendar was tight. Availability is protected intentionally — because the experience only works when there's room to do it right.
-
What should my senior wear for their portrait session?
DNA Photography sends every booked senior a full preparation guide that includes detailed outfit guidance before their session. As a starting point — solid colors and simple textures photograph beautifully, layers add visual dimension, and coordinated tones work better than perfectly matching looks. Busy patterns, large logos, and brand-new stiff clothing tend to compete with the person wearing them.
We've found that seniors who wear something they genuinely love feel more comfortable in front of the camera — and that comfort is exactly what makes the difference between a photo and a portrait. When you're dressed like yourself, you look like yourself. That's what we're after.
-
How long does a DNA Photography senior session take?
DNA Photography senior sessions range from 45 minutes for the Classic Experience to four hours for the Signature Experience. The Core Experience — the most popular choice — runs approximately two hours. All session lengths are designed to give seniors enough time to settle in, move between locations, and change outfits without feeling rushed or watched.
The best images rarely happen in the first ten minutes. They happen once your senior has relaxed and forgotten there's a camera in the room. We build that time into every session on purpose — because a great portrait can't be rushed.
-
Where does DNA Photography shoot senior portraits in Maine?
DNA Photography photographs seniors across Southern Maine, Central Maine, and the Greater Portland area, with locations chosen to match each senior's personality and story. Pineland Farms is the primary location for Classic Experience sessions. Core and Signature seniors work directly with DNA Photography during the planning process to choose locations that feel genuinely personal — wooded trails, coastal settings, athletic fields, downtown areas, or anywhere that means something to the senior specifically.
We've shot on ski slopes, hockey rinks, family farms, and quiet back roads that most people drive past without a second look. Location isn't a backdrop to us — it's part of the story. If a place matters to your senior, it matters to us.
-
Can my senior choose a location that is personally meaningful to them?
DNA Photography actively builds senior sessions around locations that are meaningful to each individual senior. Core and Signature Experience seniors work directly with the DNA Photography team during the planning call to identify locations that reflect who they are — not a generic list of approved spots. This is one of the defining differences of the DNA Photography boutique experience in Maine.
We've learned that the most powerful senior portraits happen in places that carry weight — a field where they played their last game, a spot where they go to think, a place that only makes sense to them. That context shows up in the images. Every time.
-
How does the DNA Photography senior session process work from start to finish?
DNA Photography guides every senior through a four-step experience. First, an inquiry call — a relaxed conversation to learn about the senior and confirm the right fit. Second, the photoshoot game plan — a preparation guide is sent and a planning call is scheduled two weeks before the session. Third, photo day — fully planned, outfits ready, locations locked. Fourth, the reveal and ordering session — families gather in the studio to experience the finished images together for the first time.
We designed this process so that by the time photo day arrives, your senior isn't nervous — they're ready. Every step is intentional. Nothing is left to chance. The experience is the product as much as the images are.
-
What happens at the DNA Photography reveal and ordering session?
DNA Photography's reveal and ordering session is an in-person experience where families gather in the studio to see the finished senior portraits for the first time — presented as a curated cinematic slideshow. You can also touch and flip through our amazing album options while eating your favorite snacks.
Bring the people who matter. Bring tissues if you're the type. This is not a transaction — it's the moment the whole session has been building toward. We've watched a lot of families sit in that room together, and it never gets old.
-
What is the difference between the Core and Signature senior portrait experiences?
DNA Photography's Core Experience ($950) is designed for seniors who want a complete, relaxed session — two hours, two locations, four outfits, 25 edited images, and a $200 print credit. The Signature Experience ($1,450) is for seniors who want the full chapter told — up to four hours or a split session, multiple locations, unlimited outfit changes, 40 edited images, a $300 print credit, and a Cap and Gown or Extreme Sports session included. Signature availability is limited each season.
The Core is the right choice for most seniors — it gives them everything they need to walk away with images they'll love. The Signature is for the senior who doesn't want to wonder what else could have been. Both experiences get the full DNA Photography process. The difference is time and depth.
-
Does DNA Photography offer sports or activity sessions for seniors?
DNA Photography offers an Extreme Sport Add-on ($250) that includes a one-hour session, three to four extreme edited looks, and a full online gallery. The Signature Experience includes a Cap and Gown or Extreme Sports session as part of the package.
DNA Photography also offers a 2026 Senior Season Experience for seniors who play multiple sports, play an instrument, or want their entire senior year documented across multiple sessions.
We photograph seniors on athletic fields, ski slopes, in hockey gear, with lacrosse sticks, behind drum kits, and anywhere else their passion lives. Sports aren't a prop to us — they're part of who your senior is. We treat them that way.
-
Do DNA Photography senior sessions work for seniors who are nervous in front of a camera?
DNA Photography works with nervous seniors consistently — and some of the most powerful portraits come from seniors who walked in unsure and left astonished. Before every session, DNA Photography sends a full preparation guide so nothing feels like a surprise. A planning call is scheduled two weeks before the shoot to build comfort and connection before photo day arrives.
We don't pick up the camera until your senior is ready. Not ready on a schedule — actually ready. Most seniors tell us they forgot the camera was there. That's not something that happens by accident. It happens because we spend the first part of every session just being human beings together.
-
Can family members or friends come to the senior portrait session?
DNA Photography welcomes family members and close friends at senior portrait sessions. A Small Family or Friend Add-on is available for $60, which includes five to ten images with the senior's guest. For the reveal and ordering session, DNA Photography actively encourages families to come together — the more people who matter to the senior in that room, the better.
Some of our favorite moments happen when a parent sees their senior in the slideshow for the first time. There's something about watching someone you love be celebrated that hits differently in person. We make room for that.
-
How will senior portraits be delivered after the session?
DNA Photography delivers all fully edited senior portrait images through a private online gallery. Purchased digital images include full media files for printing and personal use. Print products — albums, metal framed prints, and print folios — are ordered during the in-person reveal session and delivered directly. DNA Photography does not deliver unedited files or large unculled galleries.
We edit every image before it reaches you — because handing a family three hundred unedited photos and a download link isn't a service. It's homework. You hired us to make the decisions that require expertise. The gallery you receive reflects that.
-
What print products does DNA Photography offer for senior portraits?
DNA Photography offers a full range of heirloom print products for senior portraits, including
* an 8x12 Lay-Flat 15-Spread Premium Soft Touch Album
* an 8x12 Lay-Flat 20-Spread Premiere Album
* an 18x24 Metal Framed Image
* a 20x30 Metal Framed Image
* a 4x6 Print Folio Box
~ Additional images can be added individually or in bulk.
We bring physical samples to every reveal session so families can see and feel the difference before they decide. There is no substitute for holding a lay-flat album or standing in front of a metal print at full size. We've watched that moment change the conversation more times than we can count.
-
Does DNA Photography offer payment options for senior portrait sessions?
DNA Photography's senior portrait pricing is communicated clearly and completely at booking — no hidden fees, no surprise invoices, no pressure. Payment structure and timing are discussed directly during the inquiry call so every family can plan with confidence. DNA Photography prides itself on a process that feels as straightforward financially as it does creatively.
We think the financial conversation should be the easiest part of the whole experience. If you have questions about how investment and payment work, bring them to the inquiry call. There are no wrong questions — just decisions we'd rather make together than leave to guesswork.
-
Why do DNA Photography senior portraits look different from typical senior photos in Maine?
DNA Photography approaches every senior session as a story worth telling completely — not a pose list to execute efficiently. With a PPA Master of Photography degree, national competition recognition, and over a decade of boutique portrait experience across Southern Maine and Central Maine, DNA Photography produces senior portraits that reflect who the senior actually is — not a version of every other senior photographed at the same location with the same light.
Most photographers show up with a shot list. We show up with a conversation. The difference shows up in the images — and it shows up on the walls where those images live for the next twenty years. We're not trying to make your senior look like a senior portrait. We're trying to make them look like themselves on the best day of their year.

How do I book a senior portrait session with DNA Photography in Maine?
Booking a senior portrait session with DNA Photography begins with a simple inquiry. Families across Southern Maine, Central Maine, and the Greater Portland area can visit photosbydna.com, complete the two-to-three minute senior survey, or call directly to start the conversation. From there, DNA Photography schedules a no-pressure inquiry call to learn about the senior and confirm the right fit. If it's a match, the senior goes on the calendar and the preparation guide is sent immediately.
We don't make booking complicated — because it shouldn't be. The hardest part is usually just deciding the time is right. When you're ready, we'll be here. And if you're not sure yet, the survey takes three minutes and answers a lot of questions on its own. Start there.
